Haukipudas was a municipality of its own until 2013, with 19,053 residents when it merged into Oulu, and it still reads as a small town rather than a suburb. The church village sits on the south bank of the Kiiminkijoki, about 20 kilometres north of central Oulu, the motorway three kilometres east and the old highway running through the middle. The wooden church dates from 1762. The practical consequence: a Haukipudas membership has to stand on its own, because at that distance the Oulu market is not a fallback.
All four gyms fit inside a 1.4-kilometre radius of the village centre, so travel time within Haukipudas is not a factor. Two are open around the clock, two run group classes, none has a sauna and none is women-only. The 24-hour opening matters most to people who work in Oulu: it puts training either side of the commute.
One detail sets the district apart: not one of the four offers a free trial visit. Arrange a look around directly, or take the shortest contract on offer for the first month. Prices run from 36 to 49 euros with a median of 46, so the cheapest card sits well below the middle and is the sensible place to start comparing.
Gyms are not the only option. The village swimming hall has five pools including a 25-metre main pool and a slide, and out at Virpiniemi on the coast there is a sports institute, a ski slope and a golf course.
