Vaajakoski governed itself as a separate settlement between 1920 and 1955, stayed an industrial village in the rural municipality afterwards, and joined the city only in the 2009 merger. It sits seven kilometres east of the centre at the north end of lake Päijänne, reached by a motorway completed in 1978. Highways 4 and 9 still run straight through it: the bypass plan was approved in autumn 2025, but nothing has been built.
Three gyms serve the area, and their profile is unlike anywhere else in Jyväskylä. Two of the three have a sauna and three run group classes; one is open around the clock. None advertises a free trial, so ask about a single-visit ticket before committing, and ask at the same time whether the sauna is included in the card or charged separately — the practice varies from one place to the next.
The prices say the same thing: 45 € to 74.90 € a month, with the median at 74.90 €, meaning at least half the supply sits at the top of the scale. There is no budget keypad gym in Vaajakoski. The trade is plain — pay for coaching and a sauna close to home, or drive the seven kilometres west, where the same money buys two memberships. Several bus routes run into town, since eastbound traffic funnels through here.
The area carries its own facilities, which changes the sum. A swimming hall, a sports hall and a library are all local, and Naissaari holds the old power station, 1930s functionalist buildings and the Vaajakoski canal, part of the Keitele route. Trails and shoreline paths cover much of what three gyms cannot.
