Local customer service is staffed only at limited times, but members get in with a Fressi card around the clock. Twenty years ago Ritaharju did not exist. In 2005 it had 41 residents; at the end of 2025 it had 8,018. Construction began in 2004 at Kuivasranta and produced a wooden-house family suburb nine kilometres north of the city centre, built around a 2010 community building that holds the school, the library and the youth services.
The gym supply follows the same shape. Six gyms, three of them in Ritaharju itself and clustered within 400 metres of each other in the retail strip beside the supermarket and the furniture stores. The other three are down in Linnanmaa, 2.2 to 2.8 kilometres south.
Starting out here costs more than in most of Oulu. The cheapest monthly card is 39.90 euros and nothing goes below it, because no budget chain operates in the district. The median is 47.90 and the top of the range 49, so the whole market sits in a narrow band near the upper end. Linnanmaa starts at 22, and that is the argument for driving the extra two kilometres.
Opening hours are the other thing to check before joining. Only two of the six run around the clock, so anyone training before six in the morning or late at night is choosing between two places, not six. Four offer a free trial, three have a sauna and one is women-only.
