Skanssi is still more building site than neighbourhood. The shopping centre opened in April 2009 and became the retail hub of eastern Turku, but the district planned around it, for 5,000 to 8,000 residents, will not be finished until the 2030s. Fewer than two hundred people lived here in 2016. The central park and the new streets are due in summer 2027.
So the nearest gyms sit against the shopping centre beside the climbing park, and everything else that counts as local is in the older suburbs around it, towards Itäharju, Luolavuori and Nummi. Four of the nineteen in range are run by the city: pool and community-centre gyms usable on a single ticket, the highest such share of any district here.
On the private side prices run above the centre. The median is 47.90 euros a month, the floor 30 and the ceiling 107. Five gyms are open around the clock, four offer a free trial, seven run instructed classes and five have a sauna. The nearest AI-guided equipment is an EGYM installation at Kupittaa, a couple of kilometres off.
Getting here changed abruptly in July 2025, when Föli rebuilt its network and weekly departures to Skanssi went from roughly 550 to 2,500. Two trunk lines now pass through, one from Varissuo to the market square, one crossing town via Kupittaa and Länsikeskus to the harbour. A tram towards Kaarina has been studied but remains a plan. With the motorway alongside, gyms over the Kaarina boundary belong in your comparison too.
