A back extension bench is a training device on which the hips are supported on a padded pad and the ankles are locked behind supports. From this position the upper body is lowered by bending at the hips and raised back into a straight line with the body, loading the spinal extensors, glutes and hamstrings. The bench angle can be horizontal or angled upward, which affects the direction of the load. The device develops lower-back endurance and posterior-chain strength, and the exercise can be eased or progressed by holding a weight against the chest.
Model:
In the movement the hip flexes and extends around a fixed support point, with the spinal extensors, glutes and hamstrings raising the upper body back into a straight line.
