A pull-up bar is a firmly mounted horizontal bar from which the body hangs and rises using its own body weight. It is a simple but highly effective tool for developing upper-body pulling strength. Varying the width and direction of the grip emphasises different muscles: a wide overhand grip stresses the broadest back muscles, while a narrow underhand grip recruits the biceps more. Pull-ups build strength in the back, shoulders and arms as well as grip, and can be made easier with a band or harder with added weight.
