A barbell is a long metal bar onto which weight plates are loaded and locked at each end. It is a foundational strength-training tool used for big multi-joint lifts such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses and overhead presses. Because heavy weight can be loaded in small increments, it is excellent for the progressive development of strength and muscle mass. A barbell works several large muscle groups at once and demands good technique and core control to stabilise the lifts.
