A Smith machine is a strength-training device in which a barbell travels on fixed vertical or slightly angled rails. The guided path stabilises the bar and lets it be locked at many heights by twisting, adding safety especially when training alone. The machine can be used for squats, presses, hip thrusts and many other staple lifts, letting you focus on the target muscles without balancing the bar. The guided path reduces the work of the stabilising muscles but allows controlled, repeatable loading.
