A lat pulldown machine is a seated cable device on which a bar above the head is pulled down toward the chest while a thigh pad keeps the body in place. It mimics the pull-up movement, but the resistance can be set precisely from a weight stack, so the exercise suits all levels from light to heavy. The machine especially develops the broadest back muscles that give the back width, as well as the biceps and rear shoulders. Changing the width and direction of the grip shifts the emphasis to slightly different muscles and ranges.
