Länsikeskus is a retail cluster in the Mälikkälä district on Turku's western edge rather than a neighbourhood. The first large store opened in 1974, a hypermarket followed on Markulantie in 1990 and a second replaced an older one in 2012. Two hypermarkets, the Länsi 1 shopping centre and a row of discount chains now sit within a few hundred metres of each other.
The gyms follow the same logic: commercial buildings, ground-floor units, large free car parks. Training and the weekly shop happen in one stop, which the centre cannot offer. Without a car, the airport bus stops on Markulantie and a cross-town trunk route runs through here to Kupittaa and Skanssi.
Prices sit low. The median is 40 euros a month and the cheapest is 32.90, while the top of the range, 116, buys a full club membership. Eleven of the 30 gyms in range are open 24 hours, a clearly larger share than downtown, and nine offer a free trial session, again more than the centre.
What you give up is washing facilities: six gyms here have a sauna, against nine within reach of the centre and ten from Raunistula. Twelve run classes, five are women-only and one is municipal. The area's HUR machines, which set resistance and repetitions for you, are physically here; the EGYM equivalent is at Kupittaa on the far side of the city. Central Turku is four kilometres away, so nothing missing is out of reach.
