Gyms in Turun keskusta — what to know
Within three and a half kilometres of the Kauppatori market square there are 34 gyms, many of them within walking distance of each other. Every Föli trunk bus route passes through the square and the city bike season runs from April to late December, so distance decides very little here. What is left is price, opening hours and how big a room you want to train in.
Ten of the 34 are open around the clock. Train at six in the morning or after eleven at night and you are choosing from under a third of the district — worth settling before you sign for a year. Eight offer a free trial and five admit women only.
Prices run from 30 to 116 euros a month, median 44.90. At the bottom you buy keycard access to machines and free weights, no staffed desk. At the top you buy instructed classes and proper changing rooms: fifteen in range run classes and nine have a sauna. Two are city-run, meaning single-visit tickets rather than membership.
What surrounds the gym matters more downtown than elsewhere. The sports park and Samppalinna on the east bank of the Aura river put a running track, pitches and outdoor training equipment on one loop, and the city is concentrating its new sports building at Kupittaa, which also holds the area's only EGYM machines, the kind that set the load for you. If you study at one of the universities, no gym here beats the CampusSport fee of 80 euros for the academic year.
