Gyms in Vähäheikkilä — what to know
Vähäheikkilä sits just south of Turku centre, between Martti and Puistomäki, a little over two kilometres from the market square. It is mostly early-1900s wooden houses and the standard post-war houses built for returning servicemen, with a small industrial block and a vocational college mixed in. Despite the name it has nothing to do with Iso-Heikkilä, which is on the other side of the city. Buses into the centre stop on Vähäheikkiläntie, and by bike it is a good ten minutes.
So pick a gym by map rather than by postcode. The district itself holds only a handful, but a two-kilometre radius pulls in Uittamo, the converted Kakola prison hill, Port Arthur and Kirstinpuisto: 25 gyms. Nine are open around the clock, so a six a.m. session is realistic. Eleven run instructor-led classes, eight have a sauna, five admit women only, and two are municipal — cheap, but tied to the sports halls' own hours.
Fees stretch from 30 to 116 euros a month, median 44.90. At the bottom you pay for a door code and equipment; at the top the fee usually covers classes, a pool or coaching. Six gyms let you train once for free, and one nearby has machines that recognise the user and set the load automatically.
