Halssila climbs the rocky north-eastern shore of Lake Jyväsjärvi, about three kilometres east of central Jyväskylä. Workers from the plywood mill and the state rifle factory cleared their plots out of the boulder slopes here in the 1920s; the narrow lanes and wooden houses of the old district survive, and the 1970s and 1980s terraced housing on Halssilanrinne looks out across the water.
